Hi David,

Yes, the power consumption with the Accesspoint should be higher than with a WiFi connection. If you have a 2.5A power supply, you could use it to test again. It is best to also remove all other connected devices from the Pi so that they do not consume any electricity. I will also test it myself and see if it works.
